Why register as a Bigsalty user?

Registered Bigsalty Users can have a ‘Watchlist’ that shows when your beaches are working. You can also tailor the measurement units for the forecasts to your specific needs and set your location origin. (I’m afraid we haven’t found a way to tailor the weather to your needs; “ 4.2m weather, 4-5ft and sunny... ” but we’ll keep working on it!)

My beach isn’t listed for the forecast service. How can I get it listed?

We would love to add your requested beach. Email us with details of the exact location as well as any other information you may wish to share with Bigsalty users: .

The forecast data is not very accurate at a listed beach. Why?

Under certain situations local affects can have a big impact on the forecasted conditions. For example, a reasonable swell may be forecast but a strong offshore wind could be flattening the sea state. Wind can also be increased or decreased by local affects not picked up by the forecast model such as sea breezes, katabatic winds and venturi affects. Interpreting forecasts can be a tricky business, so for some tips, please examine The Scriptures.

What’s the Watchlist?

The Watchlist allows all registered Bigsalty users to keep an eye on current forecasted conditions at their selected top three beaches. To use the Watchlist, please register as a User by clicking on the Settings tab of the main menu and then clicking New User Sign Up. Once you have done this, click on Watchlist and add the names of your top three beaches.

How do I change measurement units?

Once you’re a registered User, you can change the measurement units for the forecast. Click on the Settings tab on the main menu and then go to Set Units. From here you can decide whether, for example, you would like to read wave height in feet or metres.

I keep having problems with the site. Who do I contact?

Even computers have bad days. Usually we find it’s because the wetsuit rack has been dripping on the server, and a little towel-down is all that’s needed. However, if you find any site problems are persisting, email us using and we’ll sort out whatever’s got your goat.

How best do I interpret the data?

If you’re asking this question you’ve made a good move because interpreting the forecast correctly will make a big difference to your success rate at the beach. For detailed weather interpretation information see The Scriptures, which are designed to give you all the information you need to score more winning sessions.

What is the accuracy of the data Bigsalty uses?

Forecasts are as good as the data models they are based on. The two main models we use are the GFS 0.5 Degree Atmospheric Model and the NWW3 1.25 x 1 deg Model for Oceanic Data. These are commercially used forecast models and of a high quality but if you’re interested in getting down to the nitty gritty of these models, then read the Forecast charts page within The Scriptures.

Bigsalty forecasts have changed my life. How can I ever thank you?

All staff at Bigsalty HQ are happy to accept return tickets to Maui as a token of your appreciation.

What the masses say

When I'm back from the PWA tour, there is nothing I like more than searching out the sickest forecast for a road trip with friends.

Big Salty has got those plans covered.
