Anybody else noticed its windy? XC weather (only kidding) says Thursday AM going to be 6m + swell and 14 seconds with westerly wind. Technically I have work but I feel a nasty cold coming on. Avon beach park early on anyone?

Hi Gregg,
One thing to note about Avon beach whilst we're on the subject of Big Salty and not XYZ Weather is that the 'Big Salty Wave Rating' (the radio buttons that you toggle on the Avon beach forecast at the top) shows a full 3 stars for tomorrow morning. This is implied from the swell period in association with the swell angle for Avon (period & angle being the highest determining factor for Avon beach) in addition to the swell height, wind direction and wind strength factors all being present.
Now, the last time I saw Avon beach with a full wave rating was many, many moons ago -actually I think I was a virgin or at least living a different life -perhaps on a paper round or in a choir.
Anyway, this suggests to me that tomorrow morning, you throw in the towel with work, sack it off or pull a sickie. Any one of those will do. You can't loose. Either way you win. You can have the sickest Avon beach session of recent years or you can point at me and laugh that the system messed up.
Or alternatively you can push some paper around the desk.... don't forget to text me...

I will be heading to Avon after I drop the kids off so should be there about 9:45.
I'm hoping it won't be too big as it has been a while.
Hope to see you there.

Too bad about the wind.
Being the honourable man I am - I tried as hard as I could to get out by swimming out through the tide to the wind line to catch some of those waves. Gregg will testify that I never got there but had a nice sunrise swim.
Having said that, there looks to be another block of wind around lunch time so I might try a little bit later.

I was just about to pack the car and do the 40min trip when I realised that the wind wasn't there. I drove to Sandbanks and could see spray kicking up from the waves at hook sands but not enough wind to get out.
I had to resign myself to going to work as i'm really short of holiday and can't afford to waste a day.
And now it looks like the wind is picking up!
Gutted!

It sounds like the wind was playing games with all of us yesterday, I also did a bit of driving around. After not getting any action in the morning at Avon. I went out at Southbourne for a mission of no mercy. I think with the tide that high, Southbourne was a bit too tricky to be worth while for the size of the waves. After a handful of two turn bone crunchers that ran me all the way up the beach full speed still in the straps (because I was unable to turn off them with risk getting nailed on the groynes) I decided it was time to look for pastures new. Going back to Avon at around 1300, it still took a leap of faith to swim out but once out it was worth while. Small / fun size put peeling perfectly off the bar. Obviously required another swim in. I've attached a picture of the session taken by a photographer Stephen McGrath because it might be interesting to see the size difference compared with Hook Sands and Witterings... Avon has to wrap a hell of a lot, but that does make it peel like the perfect surfing wave (a right - although that part isn't obvious from the photo...)
Anyway, I was feeling pretty satisfied until I received several calls from JC and Timo earlier today telling me that it's mast high down the line off broad bench (best ever obviously) and when am I leaving? Due to work commitments, I obviously can't go - so my state of mind, after being pretty good is now back to square one and leaving me looking for the next low pressure! ; ) Cruel mistress.....

Hey great to hear you had it good at Wittering, I can imagine the swell was a good size there. It is always nice to play around in the bigger stuff from time to time, not only because it gets the blood pumping but it really improves you overall - good feeling to be out the comfort zone.
But more over the next couple of days so given that it's holiday for most people, could be a good opportunity to embrace a warm winter. (So different to this time last year...!!)
Have fun, and hopefully hear about it.
Cheers
